MBE Growth of AlGaN/InGaN Photodetectors

Buckley’s group develops photodetectors using epitaxial and amorphous materials consisting of AlGaN/InGaN for incorporation in high QE single photon counting detectors.   Buckley’s group fabricates atomically tailored photocathode structures which, when combined with vacuum electron multipliers can provide very high QE detection of visible – UV photons.  By using ultra-low radioactive background materials for the photomultiplier device structures, the group hopes to improve the sensitivity of liquid Xenon dark matter detectors which rely on the collection of a handful of photons originating from a single nuclear recoil event.    The system can also be used to produce novel thin films including AlGaN/InGaN heterostructures, superlattices or quantum well structures for development of quantum sensors.
